The Apple iPhone has arguably had the most successful launch of any smartphone. Despite its limitations, the excitement and interest generated by this device has made Apple the envy of other smartphone manufacturers.

Although the iPhone was released as a consumer device, a surprising number of people are purchasing iPhones for business use. The factors that have made the iPhone so successful in the consumer market — ease of use, attractive user interface, superb integration with companion services — also make it attractive to the business market, traditionally the domain of the BlackBerry and smartphones from traditional mobile phone manufacturers like Nokia.

The biggest problem that iPhone users face in a corporate setting is getting access to their corporate email. Corporate email and personal email run on different systems. While the latter tends to run on publicly-accessible mail servers, corporate email is usually protected behind firewall systems, beyond the normal reach of the iPhone. As well, corporate email runs on systems like Microsoft Exchange and Lotus Notes, which are accessed differently from personal email servers.

One way to get your corporate email on your iPhone is to have copies of any mail you receive at the company email address automatically forwarded to your personal email address. How you do this depends on the email system you’re using, but it’s usually fairly straightforward to setup. It’s far from an ideal solution, however, because any replies you make to the emails come from your personal email account. Nor are the replies archived in the corporate system, unless you remember to CC your company address when you reply. You also don’t get access to all the ancillary information and features of the corporate system, such as access to appointment calendars and company address books.

A far better solution is to engage your IT department and get them to add the iPhone to their list of officially supported smartphones. There are a number of solutions available on the market for integrating the iPhone with corporate email servers, including software from leading enterprise vendors like Sybase, Apple and IBM. Convince them it’s in the company’s best interest to support the iPhone, especially in situations where corporate email must be archived for regulatory and compliance purposes.

The knee-jerk reaction is to simply ban the use of iPhones in corporate environments. This may work as a corporate policy, but employees won’t be happy having a second smartphone to deal with, especially if it’s a clunky device when compared to an iPhone. Before going that route, have the company explore the alternatives and see how easy it is to integrate the iPhone into their existing email system. It’s been done before with the BlackBerry, so why not support the iPhone as well?

Before I get started comparing the CECT i9 to Apple’s iPhone, I must disclose that I’m a big fan of the clones and often write about them.? I appreciate having an alternative to a mandated contract and I really enjoy some of their bonus features.? That said, in this article I will compare many of the features of these two phones side by side to help you determine which may be better for you.

Basic Included Features:? The i9 is based on the Apple model and looks and performs almost identically.? Both phones allow you to talk, text, email, web browse, listen to MP3s, watch MP4s, take photos and video, and use Bluetooth.??Both phones are quad bands. These features seemed so innovative a year or so ago but we’ve become so used to them, that they’ve become almost mainstream.? Nonetheless, both phones contain these features.?

Size: The iPhone weighs 4.7 ounces or 133 grams and measures 4.5 inches high by 2.5 inches wide.? The i9 is smaller and lighter than this.? It weighs about 100 grams. It is about .5 mm shorter and is not as fat (about 4 mm thinner.)? The Apple has a 3.5 inch touch screen whereas the i9 has a 3.2 inch touch screen. Which you like better depends on how big you want your phone.? Some say the larger screen is preferable but some find the Apple version too heavy and fat.

Dual Sim Versus Single Sim: The i9 is a dual sim phone which means that you can insert two sim cards into the phone.? This is probably one of the most popular features of the clones because this allows you to have two phone numbers or two plans.? You can have a talk plan on one carrier and then use a prepaid sim on the other to browse the Internet as needed on the cheap.

Built In Radio Vs Software And Apps:? The CECT i9 has a built in radio.? You don’t need any software or applications to use it.? The iPhone does not have a radio but, as I understand it,?there are apps available for this (which you’ll have to pay for).?And, I have heard that you can use AOL radio as well, although I don’t have personal experience with this.

Removable Battery: The iPhone has a built in battery that you can recharge but can not remove yourself.? Again, I do not have personal experience with this, but I’m told that having the dealer replace the battery for you costs about $79.? The i9 and all of the clones have a removable battery that you just pop out and replace.

Shake And Tilt: Many of the clones (including the 9) have what is called “shake control.”? This means that you can advance songs or go to “next song” or “previous song” by shaking the phone.? You don’t have to scroll around.? You can also tilt the phone and the picture will go from landscape to portrait.

Memory: Here’s one place where Apple wins.? The iPhone is available in 8GB or 16GB.? The i9 can accommodate up to 8GB, which in my experience is enough, but I’m sure some would disagree with me.

Price: Here, the knock off wins hands down.? You can get an 8GB Apple for about $200, but that’s only with a 2 year very pricey AT&T contract.? If you want the 16GB model, you’ll pay about $300, again with a contract.? The i9 iClone will typically run in the low $100 range, but you don’t have to have a contract and can go with whatever low cost service you prefer. You just insert your GSM sim card and you’re off.

The Bottom Line On Which Is Better: Which phone you consider better depends on what you are looking for in a phone.? If the novelty status of the Apple appeals to you, you’d likely be happier to go ahead and pull out your wallet.? But, if you want the technology and features without the high price and you don’t mind not having a logo of fruit on your phone, the clone may very much appeal to you.

The iPhone is one of the most successful phones in recent history. The ability to integrate numerous features makes the phone desirable, the image, design and styling make it more so. The fact its a must have accessory for a large majority of the population speaks volumes about the success Apple have had since the release.

One of the reasons the apple iPhone is so successful is because it brings all types of new digital media to the table. In fact some would say its responsible for a large part of the development of new media. For instance, Would sites like Facebook and Twitter be so popular if they weren’t accessible on your mobile phone?

Harnessing this new media is a challenge for all companies wanting involvement in the iPhone revolution, making an add-on that actually improves the features of an iPhone is somewhat difficult. Apps can be created relatively easily depending on the subject and performance targets, and of-course the skill of the development team behind it. However the devices that physically connect to the iPhone face entirely different obstacles. A good example was the power chance from 12v to 9v and 5v charging.

One of the problems when trying to integrate the iPhone with external hardware (None computers) is that the software on the phone is complex, computers can obviously install compatible software to integrate well, however when trying to integrate into something more simple in design i.e a car stereo more problems are encountered. Software is obviously not available to install on car stereos so certain features on the iPhone are not transferable.

The major problem when connecting an iPhone to a device without software is that the iPhone locks out and goes into flight mode. In the case of iPhone car kits, If you wanted to control the iPhone through the stereo or steering wheel controls the kit will lockout the iPhone, basically turning it into an iPod. Which isn’t a problem when navigating through your music collection, however you will not be able to make or receive calls or texts.

Dension have created a new iPhone car kit which allows the connection of the iPhone without it going into flight mode, you control the iPhone’s music from the phone its self so you still have full phone features combined with the music integration into your car. The iPhone is charged while connected and the stereo retains all of its usual controls, I.e volume controls.

The Gateway Lite is the next generation of iPhone car kits specifically designed for such purpose, have you mobile jukebox in full operation in your car and you phone if required. The Gateway lite is not a phone kit and does not offer any handsfree functions, but is the best solution for integrating your iPhone into your vehicle.
